The Cleland Ice Rink, which was scheduled for closure on May 24, will remain open through the summer as a result of a new financial plan that allows the facility to operate without a budgetary subsidy.

Cleland Ice Rink is one of the only ice rinks on a military installation in the Continental United States. The nearest indoor rink is 70 miles away, and its seasonal closure in the past resulted in disruption of youth hockey programs of the Cape Fear Youth FireAntz Hockey Association. We don't expect there to be any significant changes to the way that RinkAtlas operates, except that we hope that rink database additions and corrections get made faster.

Today we discovered three rinks nearby in Philadelphia that don't appear in most rink directories:

We found these rinks because of an announcement by The Philadelphia Flyers and The City of Philadelphia that The Ed Snyder Hockey Foundation will take over hockey programs at these rinks originally slated for closure due to anticipated city budget cuts.

The Ed Snyder Hockey Foundation is one of the things that makes The City of Philadelphia a great city. It helps underserved youth in this area learn how to play hockey while instilling life-enhancing values such as teamwork, positive self-esteem, the importance of hard work, and respect for themselves and their teammates.

We're glad that The ESHF and The City of Philadelphia made this deal. It's a win-win situation. The server we run on, which is conservatively managed and sits in a Tier I hosting facility had it's second major hardware problem in less than four months.

It takes a bit of time to restore RinkAtlas because some of its functions depend upon PHP modules which are in a public code repository, but are not part of the default installation of PHP. We are documenting the restoration process more completely in case we ever need to use it again.

The server was restored late last night, but some additional tweaking had to be done to the LAMP stack on the restored server.
